Athens hosts another major International Congress: ESOT 2023

Athens has been chosen to host the European Society for Organ Transplantation, on September 2023. The announcement was made at the 2019 Congress held in Copenhagen, on September.

The selection of Athens proves the strength of the city’s convention industry and medical communities as highlighted in the successful cooperation between the Hellenic Transplant Society and This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau. Athens was chosen over several other European cities. The Athens final bid presentation was made at the General Assembly of the European Society for Organ Transplantation last May.

The Congress of the European Society for Organ Transplantation is a prestigious event for the international scientific community that brings together top medical doctors and scientists from all over the world. The opportunity to host the conference in Athens will create a positive impact for the city while promoting the growing Greek life sciences industries, particularly the transplant sector.

"This is a great opportunity for Greece to become more active in organ donation and transplantation. In 2023, Athens will host more than 3,500 transplant experts from around the world, while an equal number of delegates are expected to attend the congress online,” says Professor John Fouzas, president of the Hellenic Society of Transplantation.

"Athens has been chosen to host a major scientific congress that is significant for the medical community while providing a boost to the city's economy. The strengthening of our advantages in congress tourism is a central priority for the City of Athens as part of our plan for economic development in the capital region," highlights Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis.

Athens has become a top choice for association events, ranking as the 24th most successful convention destination in the world for 2018 (according to the latest ICCA Annual Report) and 16th in Europe. This is Athens-Convention and Visitors Bureau will continue to bid for conferences on behalf of the City of Athens as part of its strategy to strengthen its presence on the world map of congress tourism.
